Adaptive sports are recreational and competitive sports for individuals with special needs. In most adaptive sports modifications are made to the equipment or perhaps the rules, that then creates an equal opportunity for people with a diverse range of special needs to participate. Adaptive sports are both challenging and therapeutic, and available to all ages. Participating in sports is the same for all individuals, no matter what level of ability or age as it can provide positive outcomes for everyone: a sense of achievement, increase self-image, creates motivation and goal setting, building relationships and so much more.

WindReach’s Adaptive Sports Programme is an integral part of the services we offer as it looks to promote all aspects of well-being: mental, physical, emotional and social health. Building relationships with the participants allows our Team to delivery opportunities that focus on abilities rather than differences. The Programme offers archery, boccia, cricket, bowling, table tennis, mini golf, goal ball, gigi ball, board games and stretching exercises catering to individuals and groups.

Everyone! All adaptive sports  involve purposeful interactions that can benefit individuals who may have a physical or cognitive disability. Some examples of disabilities our athletes are living with include: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, traumatic brain injuries, developmental delay, Dementia, visual and hearing impairments, spinal cord injury, and much more.

The outcome for participants are unique to each participant but generally includes improvement in the following areas:
• Muscle development and physical fitness
• Motor skills (both fine and gross)
• Cognitive and decision making skills
• Increased independence and confidence
• Social skills and self-esteem
• Less likely to experience symptoms of depression

When improving any of the above areas, the positive results often flow into other areas of daily living. Overall better health and wellness are achieved with growth in all of the above areas.

Each year 250 plus participants enjoy recreation and sports at WindReach. You are invited to join us! Please contact Meghan Calhoun for more information: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 238-2469.
